Positive thinking phrases are a part and parcel of important self talk, the things we think to ourselves about virtually every situation or issue before us. Obviously, these thoughts are comprised of words and phrases that may be either predominantly positive or negative. They are influenced both by the habit patterns of our personalities and the subconscious thoughts we are not aware of.

The plain truth is that the way we think makes us who we are. And while we know what we consciously think, we usually have no idea of the way we think. In other words, we rarely think about whether our thoughts are positive or negative and studies have shown that people who have mainly negative thoughts are more apt to suffer from periods of depression than those with bright, positive outlooks. Enter the importance of positive thinking, a phrase made popular by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale in his 1952 book, “The Power of Postitive Thinking” which defined it as belief in one’s self and faith in God.

Positive phrases or affirmations provide an effective method with which we can converse with our own minds. If we have a mostly negative mindset, these phrases repeated often enough, can help us to change our mindsets from negative to positive. It may be as simple as a change from “I can’t succeed” to “I will succeed”. Take some time and think about the way you think. When faced with a choice, decision or issue, what do you usually say to yourself? Go back over recent things and review just how you looked at them. Be honest and ask yourself, ” Is my outlook mostly negative or positive?”

If the answer is negative, try coming up with some positive phrases you can repeat to yourself. If you can’t think of any, there are many, many examples available via the Internet if you search under “positive thinking phrases.” They are available for download either free or at a very-reasonable cost. You will find one for just about every situation you can imagine. Once you have them, keep repeating them to yourself until youfind they are ‘popping into your mind’ when a new issue arises. Our current attitudes come from our histories with parents, teachers, friends and society in general. They become habits over time, so expect that it will take some time to change them. Remember that the most important first step in attitude alteration is to change the way we talk to ourselves (self talk). You will be amazed at just how effective this kind of positive thinking can be if you stick with it.

Depression seems to be an increasingly common complaint amongst the western world, one that causes distress to those who are close to the person suffering with the complaint, however, this is not a case of a single condition but just an umbrella term for many.

For someone who hasn’t suffered from the clinical form it must be a difficult condition to understand, naturally almost anyone can become depressed about certain aspects of their life. Getting professional help as soon as the problem is recognized is an important step to help stop the condition getting worse, professionals can help with the situation but also discover the root cause of the condition.

It is difficult going through life and not experiencing sadness or feeling low but these things normally pass in time, it is unlikely however, a doctor would diagnose depression if they did feel this way as it is generally a temporary experience.

Probably the most likely cause is stress, often owing to family or other relationship problems which for one reason or another cannot be readily solved. Eventually if the situation is allowed to continue, the problem will just get worse. Problems have a tendency to multiply when they are not corrected and this is very true with this particular condition. A person can end up feeling more helpless than they did before and it becomes a vicious circle that must be broken.

Often the problem stems from a situation in the workplace which is unresolved or ongoing. Without an intermediary stepping in these circumstances often result in the person suffering with panic attacks as well.

Often, the person who is having work problems will end up unhappy and even have periods of sick leave as they become less able to perform their work duties. When they become so unhappy they cannot face even going to work a professional must intervene to end the mental conflict.

Strangely, not all depression is self induced because it can be the result of medical treatment for an unrelated condition, this can produce symptoms that mimic exactly those of someone who is depressed.
If symptoms like this become apparent then the medication needs to be stopped before the situation worsens.

A worse situation happens where despite the best efforts of everyone involved, the reason for the person’s depression cannot be found, until it is identified, the underlying reason cannot be rectified. The difficulty is getting a person to admit to the problem in the first instance, if they cannot associate the cause with their condition then the way forward is made very hard.

Although around for a long time, it is well known that manic depression or bipolar as it is also known can be hard to diagnose, it can actually take up to five years to get the diagnosis correct!

The most important aspect of treatment is for the patient to recognize they have a problem and taking the responsibility to actually do something to cure it. Find out the cause and then get the treatment required to make you feel better after treatment is started, a full recovery is possible providing you take the appropriate steps.
